Pathfinder School is a nurturing environment for children with multiple and diverse disabilities. Our program focuses on providing students with new and engaging opportunities to explore the world around them, communicate their views and needs, to develop interests and skills, and to succeed in a scholastic setting. We believe that offering unique and innovative learning experiences is integral in supporting students’ growth, social and emotional well-being, and emerging independence.
One recent development in this vein has been the regular scheduling of Drum Circle opportunities with Jim Talbot of Drum Quest. A talented teacher and percussionist who has a national following, “Jimbo” Talbot easily engages and encourages students in rhythm and music exercises; these sessions help students articulate and express themselves musically, improve motor skills and coordination, and encourage cooperation in working toward common goals.Including DrumQuest in our programming has had an amazing impact on our students. During sessions, students are communicating with one another, engaged and actively participating, exploring new musical instruments, and most importantly—students are happy! Jimbo Talbot utilizes the power of rhythm and music to reinforce communication skills, support students to build confidence and independence, and create a sense of community. Maura Iorio, MSEd
