Defending Champ Elliott leads first round of Seniors Open
Wednesday, September 5, 2018 (COOPERSTOWN, NY) – Defending champion John Elliott of Bristol, Conn., shot a 4-under-par 67 on Wednesday to take the first-round lead at the Otesaga Hotel Seniors Open in Cooperstown.
Elliott, who shot a 68 in the opening round in 2017 en route to an 8-under par 205 victory, was one shot ahead of Mark Brown of Oyster Bay, N.Y., who shot a 68 on Wednesday.
Four golfers were two shots off the lead at 69: Tim Conley of Braselton, Ga.; Chip Johnson of Hingham, Mass.; Craig Thomas of White Plains, N.Y.; and Roy Vucinich of Moon Township, Pa. Thomas won the Seniors Open in 2015.
The 36th annual tournament continues through Friday, with 83 senior golfers from throughout the country. The traditional post-Labor Day event is hosted by the Otesaga Hotel and its Leatherstocking Golf Course, with NBT Bank the presenting sponsor. Play continues Thursday and concludes at Leatherstocking late Friday, followed by an awards ceremony and check presentation to this year’s champion.
Proceeds from this event benefit Pathfinder Village, a residential community dedicated to children and adults with Down syndrome. Annually, the Seniors Open raises more than $50,000 for scholarships for Pathfinder Village, located in nearby Edmeston, N.Y.
Proceeds also benefit the National Baseball Hall of Fame and Museum educational programs, which enable the world-famous Museum to fulfill its educational mission and care for its collections.
