Day & Residential School

Education

The Pathfinder Village School is a place where children who have special needs find the support they need, friendships that last, and room to grow. With programs specifically designed to meet the needs for children who have Down syndrome, school becomes an adventure in learning each day.

The Pathfinder Village School promotes excellence for each student, instills the desire for life-long learning and develops independent, self-sufficient, contributing members of society who find meaning and purpose in life for themselves and others, through a person-centered learning process.

The educational programs are tailored to the unique needs of the individuals; small class sizes and one-to-one instruction give the students the confidence and support necessary to succeed.

The 12-month school year is organized around:

  • academics - reading, writing, mathematics, science, geography
  • speech and communication skills
  • adapted physical education
  • art/music classes, drama and creative arts programs
  • community-based learning, including field trips to area attractions
  • computer instruction
  • employment skills, including internships at local businesses
    and on-site vocational training
  • activities of daily living
  • personal living skills
  • social competency
  • OT/PT and other related services are provided through the regional BOCES

Upon completing school at age 21, students transition to the community where they participate in life long learning activities such as community events, continuing education programs, recreational activities and employment opportunities.

The school accepts both private and publicly funded students, and has openings for children on a day-student basis.  Instructional staff members hold masters-level degrees, many support staff have specialized training for developmental disabilities, and the program is approved by the New York State Department of Education.

Learning in the Community

At Pathfinder Village, the focus of all our programs is opportunities in which our residents realize success, maximize their abilities, and interact with peers, staff, family members, and those from the community – in meaningful, positive ways. Each resident establishes goals for himself at regular intervals, in consultation with family members, guardians, and professionals. We use these guidelines during the course of daily living. Staff members provide guidance and assistance when needed, encouraging residents to make choices, voice opinions and develop their own identities through the philosophy of person-centered living Planning article by Rosanne Westgate

Pathfinder Village programs help residents build self-esteem, as they are continually encouraged to take on new challenges and endeavors. The programs focus on the interests, preferences, strengths and capacities of the individuals. Residents are encouraged to make meaningful choices and decisions in their lifestyle planning. Planning is collaborative, recurring and involves an ongoing commitment by Pathfinder Village to the individual.
