Who We Are

Pathfinder Village is unlike any other place on earth.

It is a home where people who have Down syndrome discover their own value and talents, and share these gifts with others. It is a friendly, beautiful community where residents become involved and find opportunities.

Pathfinder Village opened in 1980 with seven homes and a School. Since then, the Village has added more homes and programs, all with the goal of providing fulfillment for those who have Down syndrome.

The People
At Pathfinder Village, residents are valued for their abilities and contributions. They are encouraged to choose friendships, outings, and goals. One reason the Village "works" is our caring staff. Aides and educators encourage residents, but allow each person to exercise autonomy.

Pathfinder Village is a private, non-profit residential community that accepts residents who have a primary diagnosis of Down syndrome, ages five years and older. Admission is granted without regard to race, religion, color or national origin. The Village is licensed by the NYS Office of Mental Retardation and State Education Department.

The Programs
Through the years, Pathfinder Village has shown that people with Down syndrome respond well to activity and involvement. The Village provides high quality services in health, safety, and residential living that lead to fulfillment in other programs:

Residential: The comfortable, well-kept homes add much to Village life. Households of five to ten people share experiences and responsibilities, and create a family-like atmosphere.

Health: A complete array of services are provided. All residents contribute to their own health through hygiene, diet, and exercise. Bassett Healthcare is just minutes away for regular medical care.

Educational: The Village School provides children the skills they need to grow into independent adults. The year-round program is based on New York's Learning Standards, and state-approved educators direct students in positive ways.

Vocational: Adult residents attend vocational/educational programs in local communities each weekday. These programs are developed in concert with Arc Otsego.

Recreational: The full schedule of activities allows residents to experience the arts, trips, and sports events. Everyone stays mentally sharp, physically active, and socially engaged through these programs.

Outreach: The Village's Kennedy-Willis Center on Down Syndrome provides education and counseling to families needing information. The Center also hosts college interns, and supports research by accredited institutions that builds on our knowledge of Down syndrome.

The Pride
At Pathfinder Village, there is a sense of pride everywhere. The facilities are kept at their pristine best. Our residents glow with confidence and take on new challenges. The staff shares in our residents' achievements, and works to expand programs and choices. The Village enjoys strong support from our families, donors and friends.

The Promise
Our logo, "... that each life may find meaning," is a promise. The management and staff are committed to creating a home that is safe and nurturing, inviting and exciting. Pathfinder Village is a one-of-a-kind place where people who have Down syndrome experience growth and the satisfaction of belonging.
